How to Treat Your Enemies
Like the Prophet ﷺ

The principle of treating one’s enemies with wisdom and mercy is one of the most challenging yet profound aspects of the prophetic character. In a world often driven by retribution, the example of the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ stands as a testament to the power of forgiveness and reconciliation. His approach was never simply to defeat an opponent, but to win their heart through compassion and magnanimity, a wisdom that transformed entire communities and left a legacy of peace. This method demonstrates that true victory is not in overpowering an enemy, but in turning their enmity into friendship.
A powerful illustration of this prophetic wisdom was witnessed during the conquest of Makkah. After years of persecution, exile, and warfare, the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ returned to his birthplace as a victor. The very people who had tortured his followers, driven him from his home, and waged war against him now stood before him, powerless and expecting the worst. Instead of seeking revenge, the Prophet ﷺ asked them a simple, profound question: “What do you think I will do with you?” Expecting retribution, they replied, “You are a noble brother, the son of a noble brother.” In an act of unparalleled mercy, he ﷺ declared, “Go, for you are free.” This universal amnesty transformed bitter enemies into devoted followers, demonstrating that true strength lies not in vengeance, but in forgiveness.

Practical Applications:

Practice Forbearance and Forgiveness:

When confronted with hostility, the first step is to master your anger and practice forbearance for the sake of Allāh. If you have been wronged, strive to forgive, remembering that Allāh loves those who are merciful and forgiving. This act not only pleases Allāh but also frees your own heart from the heavy burden of resentment.

Respond with Goodness:

The Qurʾān teaches us to, “Repel [evil] by that [deed] which is better” (41:34). This divine instruction encourages responding to harshness with kindness, to insults with patience, and to harm with good deeds. This noble approach has the power to disarm an adversary, soften their heart, and pave the way for them to become a close friend.

Seek Peace and Reconciliation:

Always prioritize avenues for peace & reconciliation in any conflict. Islām values unity and harmony, and actively working to resolve disputes justly and amicably is a deeply virtuous act. Strive to be a peacemaker, following the prophetic example of mending broken ties and fostering brotherhood.

Embodying this prophetic wisdom in dealing with our adversaries is a true testament to the strength of one’s faith. It is a path that replaces hostility with harmony, reflecting the highest ideals of the Islamic character. By choosing mercy over revenge and reconciliation over conflict, we not only honor the legacy of the Prophet ﷺ but also open the doors to immense blessings and inner peace. May Allāh grant us the strength and wisdom to follow in the footsteps of His beloved Messenger ﷺ and to be sources of mercy in the world. Āmīn.
