How to Teach Islam
Like the Prophet ﷺ

The method of teaching employed by the Prophet ﷺ was not merely about conveying information; it was a holistic approach designed to cultivate piety, foster deep understanding, and nurture an unwavering love for Allah ﷻ and His Messenger ﷺ. This prophetic methodology, inherited by his noble Companions رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ, prioritised the spiritual and character development of the student over rote memorisation. It was a method rooted in compassion, wisdom and a profound concern for the well-being of the learner, both in this life and the next.

A powerful example of this is found in the story of Muʿāwiyah ibn al-Ḥakam as-Sulamī رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ. As a new Muslim, he was still learning the etiquette of prayer. He narrates that while praying behind the Prophet ﷺ, another man sneezed. Unaware of the prohibition of speaking during prayer, Muʿāwiyah رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ said, ‘Yarḥamuk Allāh’ (May Allah have mercy on you). The other Companions رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ began to stare at him disapprovingly. After the prayer concluded, the Prophet ﷺ called him. Recalling the moment, Muʿāwiyah رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ said, ‘I have never seen a better teacher than him, neither before nor after. By Allah, he neither scolded me, nor beat me, nor reviled me.’ Instead, the Prophet ﷺ gently explained, ‘Indeed, this prayer is not a place for any of the common speech of people; it is only for glorification, declaring greatness, and the recitation of the Qurʾān.’ This beautiful encounter perfectly illustrates the core principles of prophetic teaching: correcting mistakes with gentleness, fostering a safe environment for learning, and prioritizing the student’s dignity.

Practical Applications:

Focus on Akhlāq (Character) First: The Prophet’s ﷺ primary concern was the student’s state. Before imparting complex knowledge, focus on cultivating good character, honesty and compassion.

Nurture Understanding Over Rote Memorisation: Encourage students to reflect on the wisdom behind Islamic teachings. Help them understand the why behind a ruling, not just the what, to foster a deeper, more meaningful connection to their faith.

Correct with Gentleness and Wisdom: When a mistake is made, address it privately and with kindness, as the Prophet ﷺ did. Avoid public shaming or harsh criticism, which can create resentment and close the doors to learning.

Teach Through Living Example: The most powerful lesson is your own conduct. Embody the principles of Islam you wish to instil in others, from your patience and kindness to your devotion in worship.

Bridge Knowledge with Action: Encourage the immediate application of knowledge. Show students how Islamic principles provide practical solutions and guidance for their daily lives, making their faith a lived reality.

Conclusion

May Allah ﷻ grant us the tawfīq (divine success) to emulate the compassionate and wise teaching methods of His beloved Prophet ﷺ. May He allow us to be sources of guidance and mercy, nurturing a generation of Muslims who are not only knowledgeable but are also embodiments of prophetic character, dedicated to serving Him with excellence. Āmīn.
