How to Show Integrity
Like the Prophet ﷺ
unwavering moral principles
In Islam, integrity is not merely about honesty in public; it is the profound alignment of one’s private character with their public persona. This state of spiritual consistency, known as iḥsān, is rooted in the unwavering belief that Allah ﷻ is everwatchful. The Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ and his noble Companions embodied this principle, living lives where their actions in seclusion were as pure and righteous as their deeds in the open. Their integrity was not for the praise of people but for the pleasure of their Creator, driven by a deep consciousness of Allah (taqwā) that governed their every decision.
A striking example of this legacy is found in the life of Imam Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ, a renowned scholar from the generation that followed the Companions. As a successful merchant, he once purchased a large stock of oil for 40,000 dirhams.Upon discovering that a mouse had fallen into one of the containers, he faced a critical choice. He could have easily concealed this, sold the oil, and no one would have known, as the contaminated container was just one among many. However, his profound fear of Allah ﷻ and unwavering commitment to integrity compelled him to a different path. He disposed of the entire stock, ensuring not a single drop of potentially impure oil reached the people. He chose a staggering financial loss over the slightest compromise of his principles, demonstrating the powerful influence of prophetic teachings on his character.
Here are a few ways to cultivate this prophetic quality in our own lives:
Practical Applications:
Cultivate God-Consciousness (Taqwā):
The foundation of integrity is the constant awareness that Allah ﷻ sees you at all times. Before you speak or act, pause to remind yourself that your deeds are being recorded for a Day when all secrets will be laid bare. This consistent reminder is the most powerful deterrent against compromising your principles for worldly gain.
Practice Honesty in Small Matters:
Integrity is a spiritual muscle strengthened through practice. Make a conscious effort to be meticulously honest in all your affairs, no matter how small. Return the correct change, fulfill the hours you are paid to work, and speak the truth even when it is difficult. These small, consistent acts of honesty build a character that can withstand greater tests.
Prioritise Principles Over Profit:
The story of Imam Ibn Sīrīn رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ is a timeless lesson in prioritising one’s values over personal gain. Inevitably, you will face choices where you can benefit by compromising your principles. In these moments, remember that the temporary gain of this world is worth nothing compared to the eternal pleasure of Allah ﷻ. Make the choice that brings you peace of conscience, even if it comes at a worldly cost.
Ultimately, embodying integrity like the Prophet ﷺ and the righteous predecessors is a profound act of worship. It is the outward manifestation of an inner reality—a heart that is constantly aware of its Lord. By cultivating taqwā, practicing honesty in all our dealings, and prioritising our principles over worldly gain, we build a character that is pleasing to Allah and earns immense reward in this life and the next.
May Allah ﷻ grant us the sincerity and strength to live with unwavering integrity, both in public and in private. Āmīn
