How to Sacrifice for Others
Like the Prophet ﷺ
selfless devotion to others.
The spirit of īthār, or selfless sacrifice, is a profound virtue deeply embedded in the teachings of Islam and exemplified by the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ. This noble characteristic involves prioritising the needs of others over one’s own, even in times of personal hardship, out of a sincere desire to please Allah ﷻ. It is a cornerstone of a compassionate and unified community, reflecting a believer’s deep faith and trust in the divine reward. The lives of the Prophet’s Companions رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ were a testament to this principle, as they learned directly from his example how to embody true generosity and brotherhood.
A beautiful example of īthār is found in the historical bond between the Anṣār (the helpers from Madīnah) and the Muhājirūn (the emigrants from Makkah). When the Muhājirūn arrived in Madīnah, having forsaken their homes and wealth for their faith, the Prophet ﷺ established a formal brotherhood between them and the Anṣār. The Anṣār رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ welcomed their brothers with unparalleled generosity, offering to split their entire livelihoods in half—their homes, their wealth and even their date palm orchards. Some went as far as offering to divorce one of their wives for their Muhājir brother to marry. This extraordinary level of sacrifice, giving up what was most precious to them, was met with the equally noble dignity of the Muhājirūn رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ, who graciously declined, asking only to be shown the way to the marketplace to earn their own keep. This incident, praised in the Qurʾan, showcases a community built not on material gain, but on a foundation of selfless love for the sake of Allah ﷻ.
Practical Applications:
Prioritise Others’ Needs:
Consciously put the needs of others before your own, especially those in your family, neighborhood or the wider community who are facing hardship. This can be as simple as sharing a meal or offering your time and support.
Give From What You Love:
True sacrifice is not giving away what is surplus or unwanted, but sharing something that you value. This act purifies the heart and multiplies the reward from Allah ﷻ, as it demonstrates a detachment from worldly possessions.
Practice Selflessness in Daily Life:
Seek out small, everyday opportunities to practice īthār. Let someone go ahead of you in a queue, offer a helping hand without being asked or choose the smaller portion for yourself. These consistent, small acts build a selfless character.
Purify Your Intention:
Ensure your acts of sacrifice are performed with pure sincerity (ikhlāṣ), seeking reward from Allah ﷻ alone and not recognition or praise from people. The value of any deed is tied to the intention behind it.
Islamic Conclusion:
Embodying the spirit of īthār is a profound act of worship that strengthens faith, fosters unbreakable bonds of brotherhood, and draws a believer closer to Allah ﷻ. It transforms society from one of self-interest to one of mutual care and compassion, reflecting the beautiful example set by our beloved Prophet ﷺ and his noble Companions رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ.
May Allah ﷻ instill within us the spirit of īthār and grant us the strength to sacrifice for others for His sake alone.
Āmīn.
