How to Prioritise the Afterlife
Like the Prophet ﷺ
eternal success over worldly gains.
The Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ and his noble Companions رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ serve as our ultimate guides on how to live a life focused on the eternal reward of the Hereafter. The Prophet ﷺ himself lived with profound detachment from worldly comforts, constantly reminding his followers that this life is a temporary abode and a testing ground. His Companions absorbed this lesson deeply, understanding that true success lies in attaining Allah’s pleasure and Paradise. Their lives were characterised by a deep awareness of the fleeting nature of worldly pleasures and a profound longing for the everlasting bliss of the Ākhirah.
Consider the story of ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ, a wealthy and generous Companion. Though known for his immense wealth, he never allowed it to consume his heart or distract him from his ultimate purpose. He viewed his riches as a trust from Allah, to be used in supporting the poor, the needy and the cause of Islam. On one occasion, a massive trade caravan laden with goods arrived for him, filling the streets of Madīnah. Instead of rejoicing, he was deeply moved, and tears streamed down his face. He exclaimed, “I fear that my abundant wealth will become a trial for me!” He then proceeded to distribute the entire caravan’s worth of goods in charity, demonstrating his profound detachment from worldly possessions and his unwavering commitment to the Ākhirah. His actions serve as a powerful reminder that we should use the blessings Allah has bestowed upon us to earn His pleasure and prepare for our eternal home. The Companions رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ truly embodied the teaching of the Prophet ﷺ that this world is a bridge, not a destination.
To cultivate this mindset in our own lives, we can adopt the following practical habits:
Reflect on Death Regularly:
Remind yourself of the inevitability of death and the importance of preparing for the meeting with Allah.
Minimise Worldly Attachments:
Strive to reduce your attachment to material possessions and focus on spiritual growth and deeds that will benefit you eternally.
Increase Charitable Giving:
Give generously to those in need, remembering that your wealth is a trust from Allah and that charity does not decrease wealth.
Perform Good Deeds Sincerely:
Ensure that your actions are motivated by a sincere desire to please Allah alone, not for worldly recognition or praise.
Make Duʿāʾ for the Ākhirah:
Constantly supplicate to Allah, asking Him to grant you success in the Hereafter and to make you among the inhabitants of Jannah.
The lives of the Companions رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ offer invaluable lessons on how to prioritise the Ākhirah. By emulating their example, which is a direct reflection of the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ, and striving to live a life of piety, generosity and detachment, we can hope to attain Allah’s pleasure. May Allah grant us the tawfīq to follow in their footsteps, make the Ākhirah our ultimate goal, and unite us with the righteous in Jannah.
Āmīn.
