How to Prepare for Death
Like the Prophet ﷺ

The Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ taught his followers to view this world as a temporary station and the Hereafter as the ultimate, eternal reality. He instilled in his Companions, the noble ṣaḥābah رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ, an unparalleled understanding of this principle. Their lives became a testament to their unwavering belief in Allah and their meticulous preparation for the day they would meet Him. They did not fear death; rather, they saw it as a beautiful transition, a long-awaited meeting with their Lord. Their actions provide us with a perfect blueprint for how to live a life focused on the Hereafter.
A striking example of this mindset is found in the final days of the great Companion ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd h. As he lay on his deathbed, the Caliph ʿUthmān ibnʿAffān رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ came to visit him. He asked if ʿAbdullāh was in need of anything and offered him financial assistance for his daughters. ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ refused, explaining that his only need was the mercy of Allah. Regarding his daughters, he said with complete certainty that he had taught them to recite Sūrat al-Wāqiʿah every night, as he had heard the Prophet ﷺ say it was a protection from poverty. He had instilled in them a profound reliance on Allah, knowing that true provision and wealth lie in piety and obedience. This beautiful anecdote illustrates the ṣaḥābah’s focus on spiritual preparation over material comfort, a direct result of the Prophet’s g teachings.

Practical Applications:

Increase the Remembrance of Death:

Following the Prophetic advice, frequently remember death to soften the heart and detach it from worldly distractions. This can be done by visiting graveyards, reading the Quran, and reflecting on the temporary nature of life.

Fulfill Your Obligations:

Settle all outstanding affairs to meet Allah with a clean slate. This includes financial debts, making up missed prayers or fasts, and fulfilling any promises made to others.

Seek Common Ground:

Begin by identifying areas of agreement. Building on a shared foundation makes it easier to discuss points of difference constructively.

Seek Constant Forgiveness:

Make sincere tawbah (repentance) a daily habit. Ask for forgiveness from Allah for your shortcomings and seek forgiveness from anyone you may have wronged, as rectifying injustices is a crucial part of preparing for the Final Day.

Invest in Lasting Good Deeds:

Strive to leave behind a legacy of good deeds (ṣadaqah jāriyah) that will continue to benefit you after you pass. Engage in acts of charity, share beneficial knowledge, and be a source of kindness to all.

Strengthen Your Connection with Allāh:

The ultimate preparation is a strong and sincere relationship with your Creator. Dedicate quality time to prayer, recitation of the Qurʾān, and making heartfelt duʿāʾ (supplication).

Conclusion:

The lives of the Companions رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ are a reflection of the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ  and serve as a beacon of guidance for us. By emulating their devotion, sincerity, and unwavering faith, we too can learn to face death not with fear, but with tranquility and hope. May Allah grant us the ability to live our lives in a state of preparation, and may He grant us a beautiful ending and reunite us with our beloved Prophet ﷺ and his Companions in Jannah.
