How to Memorise the Qurʾan
Like the Prophet ﷺ

The early generations of Islam, known as the Salaf al-Ṣāliḥ (Pious Predecessors), possessed an unparalleled dedication to the Qur’an. For them, memorisation was not merely an act of rote learning but a deep, spiritual engagement with the divine words of Allah. They approached the Qur’an as a living guide for every aspect of their lives, a source of light and wisdom to be understood, cherished and implemented. This holistic approach, rooted in sincerity and a profound desire to connect with the Creator, was the secret to their success in preserving the sacred text not just in their minds, but in their hearts and actions.
A powerful example of this method is found in the life of the great Companion, ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd h. Renowned for his intimate knowledge and beautiful recitation of the Qur’an, he learned directly from the Prophet Muḥammad g. He would spend countless hours in the Prophet’s g blessed presence, absorbing not only the words but also their context, explanation and practical application. It is famously narrated that ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd h and other Companions would not move on to a new set of verses until they had fully understood the meaning and implemented the teachings of the verses they had already memorised. This emphasis on comprehension and action was the hallmark of their methodology. They believed that memorisation without understanding was incomplete, and knowledge without action was a burden. By striving to live the Qur’an, they forged an unbreakable bond with it, which facilitated their memorisation and allowed them to retain it with remarkable accuracy.

Practical Applications:

To adopt this blessed methodology, we can integrate the following practices into our own memorisation journey:

Sincerity of Intention (Niyyah):

Begin and end every session by renewing your intention, ensuring your effort is purely for the pleasure of Allah alone and not for worldly recognition.

Understanding the Meaning:

Before memorizing a verse, take time to read its translation and a reliable tafsīr (exegesis). Knowing what Allah is communicating to you will transform the words from text into a personal message.

Consistent Recitation with Tajwīd:

Recite the verses you are memorizing repeatedly throughout the day, focusing on correct pronunciation (tajwīd) to honor the sacred text as it was revealed.

Regular and Structured Review:

Dedicate a significant portion of your time to reviewing what you have already memorised. The strength of your memorisation lies in consistent and disciplined revision.

Implementation in Daily Life:

Make a conscious effort to act upon the commandments and lessons in the verses you learn. This practical application solidifies the verses in your heart and soul.

Seek a Qualified Teacher:

Find a knowledgeable teacher who can correct your recitation, guide you through the meanings and keep you motivated on this noble path.

Make Sincere Duʿāʾ:

Constantly ask Allah to make the memorisation of the Qur’an easy for you, to increase you in understanding, and to grant you the ability to live by its teachings.

We pray that Allah grants us the tawfīq (divine assistance) to memorise His book with sincerity and deep understanding. May He make the Qur’an a guiding light in our lives, a companion in our graves and a proof for us on the Day of Judgement.
Āmīn.
