How to Love for Allah’s Sake
Like the Prophet ﷺ

The purest form of love in Islam is that which is done solely for the sake of Allah. This principle, known as al-ḥubb fī Allāh, was masterfully established by the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ when he instituted the brotherhood (mu’ākhāh) in Madīnah. He united the Muhājirūn (emigrants from Makkah) and the Anṣār (helpers of Madīnah) with a bond of faith that transcended blood ties, creating a community built on selfless love and mutual support for the pleasure of Allah alone.
The most profound example of this love is found in the brotherhood between ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf رضي الله عنه, a wealthy merchant who had left everything in Makkah, and Saʿd ibn ar-Rabīʿ رضي الله عنه, one of the wealthiest men of the Anṣār. Upon being paired, Saʿd رضي الله عنه made an astonishing offer to his new brother: ‘O my brother! I am the wealthiest among the people of Madīnah. I have two orchards; take whichever of the two you like. And I have two wives; see which of them is more pleasing to you, and I will divorce her so that you may marry her.’ This was a genuine willingness to part with half of his entire livelihood for a brother he had just met. In his piety, ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf رضي الله عنه replied, ‘May Allah bless you in your family and your wealth. Just show me the way to the marketplace.’ Their love was a transaction with Allah, not with each other.

Practical Applications:

How can we strive to emulate this profound love in our lives today?

Make Sincere Duʿāʾ for Others:

The simplest yet most powerful act of love is to pray for your brother or sister in their absence. This act is beloved to Allah and demonstrates a pure intention, as you seek no recognition from the person you are praying for. It is a direct conversation with Allah on behalf of someone you love for His sake.

Give Selflessly:

Emulate the spirit of Saʿd رضي الله عنه by offering your time, resources, or skills without expecting anything in return. This could be helping a friend move, offering financial support discreetly, or simply providing a listening ear. The key is to do it with the intention of seeking Allah’s pleasure alone.

Preserve Their Dignity:

True love also involves empowering others, just as ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān رضي الله عنه sought to establish himself. When helping someone, do so in a way that preserves their honor and encourages their independence. True brotherhood is about building each other up, not creating dependency.

Conclusion:

Emulating this profound love requires a sincere heart and a commitment to prioritizing Allah’s pleasure above all else. It is a love that purifies the soul, strengthens the community, and earns immense reward. May Allah grant us the sincerity to love one another for His sake alone and unite our hearts upon faith and obedience, just as He united the hearts of the Ṣaḥābah.
Āmīn.
