How to Live Simply
Like the Prophet ﷺ

The lives of the companions رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ of the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ are beacons of light, illuminating the path to true contentment. Their simplicity, born from a deep conviction in the ephemeral nature of this world and a profound love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, is a lesson we desperately need today. They understood that true wealth lies not in material accumulation but in the richness of the heart, the strength of faith, and the purity of intention.
Consider the story of ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf رضي الله عنه, one of the ten promised Paradise. Though a wealthy merchant, his heart was never attached to his wealth. He used his resources generously for the sake of Allah, supporting the poor and equipping the Muslim armies. Once, a huge caravan belonging to him arrived in Madīnah, causing a great commotion. The Prophet’s ﷺ wife, ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنه, heard the noise and was told of the massive caravan. The Prophet ﷺ then remarked, “I see ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān entering Paradise crawling.” When ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān رضي الله عنه heard this, he was deeply concerned and went to the Prophet ﷺ. Upon learning what was said, he declared, “I testify before you, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, that this entire caravan, with all its goods, is for the sake of Allah !” He immediately distributed everything to the poor and needy, demonstrating his profound detachment from worldly possessions. This incident highlights that wealth itself is not blameworthy, but attachment to it is.

Practical Applications:

Cultivate Gratitude:

Regularly reflect on the blessings Allah has bestowed upon you, no matter how small. This shifts your focus from what you lack to what you have.

Limit Material Desires:

Consciously resist the urge to constantly acquire new possessions. Before buying something, ask yourself if it is a true need.

Practice Generosity:

Give regularly in charity, even if it’s a small amount. Sharing your resources with others helps break the chains of materialism.

Simplify Your Life:

Declutter your home and possessions. A simpler physical environment often leads to a clearer and more focused mind.

Focus on Spiritual Growth:

Dedicate time each day to prayer, reflection and learning about Islam. This strengthens your connection with Allah and helps you prioritise what truly matters.

The path to contentment lies not in accumulating wealth, but in purifying the heart and living a life of simplicity, generosity, and devotion to Allah . By emulating the example of the companions رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ, we can find true success in this world and the Hereafter. May Allah grant us the ability to live simply, like the companions رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ, and to prioritise the Hereafter over the fleeting pleasures of this world.
