How to Follow the Sunnah
of the Prophet ﷺ

The Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ is not merely a collection of historical records; it is a luminous path illuminating every step of a believer’s life. To follow the Sunnah is to walk in the footsteps of the one sent as a mercy to the worlds, transforming our daily habits into acts of worship and love. The early scholars of Islam, may Allah have mercy on them, understood this profound connection. They did not just study the prophetic traditions; they absorbed them, allowing the character and conduct of the Prophet ﷺ to shape their very being. Their lives serve as a powerful testament to what it means to truly live the Sunnah with sincerity and reverence.
A powerful example of this dedication is found in the life of Imam Mālik رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ , the great scholar of Madīnah. His approach to knowledge was rooted in an immense fear of misrepresenting the religion of Allah. It is narrated that a man travelled for six months to ask him a single question. After hearing the query, Imam Mālik رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ paused and then replied with profound humility, ‘I do not know.’ The man was shocked. ‘I came from so far away, and you are the Imam of Madīnah! What shall I tell the people back home?’ Imam Mālik رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ calmly responded, ‘Tell them that Mālik does not know.’ This incident reveals a core principle of following the Sunnah: prioritising truth over ego. The early scholars understood that speaking without knowledge was a betrayal of the trust placed upon them. Their caution was not a sign of weakness but a reflection of their deep love for the Prophet ﷺ and their fear of altering his perfect way. They embodied the hadith that warns against speaking on behalf of Allah and His Messenger without certainty.

Practical Applications:

Seek Knowledge with Humility:

Begin your journey by seeking authentic knowledge from qualified scholars who embody the Sunnah. Approach learning not to win arguments, but to draw closer to Allah.

Study the Sīrah with Love:

Immerse yourself in the Sīrah (prophetic biography). Reading about the life of the Prophet ﷺ is the surest way to develop a deep, personal love for him and a genuine desire to emulate his character.

Start Small and Be Consistent:

Choose a few simple Sunnah acts to incorporate into your daily life, such as using the siwāk, reciting the du’as for entering and leaving the home, or smiling at others. Consistency in small deeds is more beloved to Allah than grand but infrequent actions.

Purify Your Intentions:

Constantly renew your intention that you are performing these acts solely to please Allah and to follow the beautiful example of His Messenger ﷺ. Sincerity is the soul of every action.

Cherish the Prescribed Path:

Be cautious of introducing new matters into the religion (bidʿah). The path laid out in the Qur’an and Sunnah is complete and perfect. Find beauty and contentment in the practices established by the Prophet ﷺ.

Conclusion:

May Allah grant us the tawfīq (divine assistance) to truly understand and implement the Sunnah in our lives with the same reverence and sincerity as the righteous predecessors. May He fill our hearts with a profound love for the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ and make us worthy of his intercession on the Day of Judgement.
