How to Be Patient Like
the Prophet ﷺ?
The following is an excerpt from Tarāshe by Muftī Taqī ʿUthmānī,
showcasing the extraordinary endurance of the early believers.
Patience, or ṣabr, is a cornerstone of faith (īmān) in Islām, a virtue repeatedly emphasized in the Qurʾān and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ. It is not merely passive endurance but an active, conscious choice to remain steadfast, hopeful, and reliant on Allāh in the face of adversity, persecution, and personal loss. This beautiful patience is a light for the believer, a means of attaining immense reward and closeness to Allāh. The life of the Prophet ﷺ serves as the ultimate blueprint for developing this profound quality, demonstrating how to navigate life’s greatest trials with grace and unwavering trust in the Divine.
The Prophet ﷺ himself was the epitome of ṣabr, enduring immense trials throughout his life. Consider his early years in Makkah, where he faced ridicule, boycott, and physical harm from his own people. Despite the immense pressure and suffering, he never wavered in his mission or lost hope in Allāh’s promise. A particularly powerful example is his journey to Ṭāʾif. Seeking support, he was instead met with cruel rejection, insulted, and pelted with stones by the town’s people until his blessed feet bled. In this moment of profound pain and disappointment, the angel of the mountains offered to crush the people of Ṭāʾif between two mountains. Yet, the Prophet ﷺ, in his immense mercy and patience, refused. He made a duʿā for their future generations, saying, “No, rather I hope that Allāh will bring forth from their loins offspring who will worship Allāh alone, and will not associate anything with Him.” This incident highlights that prophetic patience is not just about enduring hardship; it is about maintaining hope, compassion, and a long-term vision rooted in unwavering trust in Allāh’s divine plan.
Practical Applications:
Reframe Trials as Tests: Understand that every difficulty is a test from Allāh, designed to purify you, elevate your status, and bring you closer to Him. This perspective shifts your mindset from one of despair to one of spiritual growth and opportunity.
-
Turn to Allāh in Supplication (Duʿā): When faced with hardship, increase your supplications. Pour your heart out to Allāh, asking Him for strength, patience, and ease. Remember the promise of Allāh that He is with the patient, and know that He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, ready to answer the call of His servant.
-
Reflect on Prophetic Stories: Draw inspiration from the lives of the Prophets and the pious predecessors. Reading about the patience of Prophet Ayyūb (ʿalayhi assalām) or the steadfastness of the Companions provides comfort, context, and a powerful reminder that you are not alone in your struggles.
- Practice Gratitude (Shukr): Even in the midst of difficulty, actively search for blessings to be grateful for. Shukr shifts your focus from what you have lost to what you still possess, fostering a positive heart and strengthening your reliance on Allāh’s infinite mercy.
Embracing patience like the Prophet ﷺ is a profound spiritual journey. It transforms trials into opportunities for growth, deepens our reliance on Allāh, and unlocks the door to immense reward. By internalizing these lessons, we can learn to face life’s challenges not with bitterness, but with a heart full of steadfast endurance and unwavering hope in His plan.
May Allāh grant us the beautiful patience (ṣabr jamīl) of His beloved Prophet ﷺ and make us among those who are steadfast. Āmīn.
