How to Be Generous
Like the Prophet ﷺ

Generosity, or ṣadaqah, is a cornerstone of Islam, reflecting a believer’s trust in Allah’s provision and their love for others. The life of the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ is the ultimate example of selfless giving, where he would give even when he had little for himself. His teachings and personal example inspired a generation of Companions رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ whose acts of charity and sacrifice remain a source of inspiration for Muslims today. Their love for Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى and His Messenger ﷺ transcended all worldly possessions, leading them to give freely and abundantly in His path.

One of the most profound examples of this spirit occurred during the preparation for the Battle of Tabuk. The Prophet ﷺ called upon the Muslims to contribute towards equipping the army for this crucial expedition. Hearing the call, ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ felt it was his chance to finally surpass Abū Bakr aṣ-Ṣiddīq رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ in good deeds. He brought half of his entire wealth to the Prophet ﷺ. When asked, “What have you left for your family, O ʿUmar?” he replied with confidence, “I have left for them the same amount.” Following him, Abū Bakr aṣ-Ṣiddīq رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ came forward with his contribution. The Prophet ﷺ asked him the same question: “What have you left for your family, O Abū Bakr?” He replied with unwavering faith, “I have left for them Allah and His Messenger.” At that moment, ʿUmar رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ realised the depth of Abū Bakr’s devotion and said, “I can never surpass him in anything.”

Practical Applications:

Purify Your Intention: Before giving, renew your intention that the act is solely for the pleasure of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, not for praise or recognition from others.

Give From What You Love: True sacrifice is demonstrated when you give from the wealth and possessions you cherish, not just from what is excess to your needs.

Consistency Over Quantity: Small, consistent acts of charity are more beloved to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى than a single, large donation made infrequently. Establish a regular habit of giving, even if it is small.

Give in Secret: Whenever possible, give your charity discreetly. This protects the dignity of the recipient and safeguards your intention from the subtle whispers of pride.

Support Righteous Causes: Identify and contribute to reputable Islamic organisations and projects that are working to benefit the Muslim community and spread the message of Islam.

Start with Those Closest: Begin with your own family, neighbors and local community members who may be in need, as they have the first right over your charity.

Conclusion

The unparalleled generosity of the Companions رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ is a direct reflection of the teachings and character of the Prophet ﷺ. While we may not reach the level of Sayyidunā Abū Bakr aṣ-Ṣiddīq رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ, we can all strive to embody their spirit of sacrifice in our own lives. By giving freely for the sake of Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى, we purify our wealth, strengthen our faith and invest in our hereafter. May Allah grant us the sincerity to give from what we love, the wisdom to spend in His path, and may He accept our humble efforts and multiply our rewards. Āmīn.
